Those black streaks running down the shingles are almost always organic growth — a hardy algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads in the shade, holds moisture, and it will keep spreading until something removes it. Moss and lichen are the same story with deeper roots.
We don't blast shingles with a pressure washer. Roofs get soft washed.
Soft washing means low pressure — about what a garden hose puts out — plus a cleaning solution that kills the growth at the surface instead of scraping it off. The granules stay where the manufacturer put them, and the roof looks like the roof again.
Most jobs are a few hours, not a few days. And a clean roof is a lot cheaper than a new one.
